Kuan-Chih Huang

He wants to instil a love of music in children and young people - regardless of the genre - to broaden their horizons and, above all, make them stronger for life.

Strong through music

Compared to conventional harmonicas, his harmonica is much larger, sounds much deeper and is primarily an accompanying instrument. Kuan-Chih Huang plays the bass in the “Sirius Ensemble”, which has an unmistakable, very warm sound and is an important support in ensembles. “I find that the sound of the harmonica has a metallic explosiveness that is reminiscent of brass instruments, but at the same time has a delicate finesse that is as soft as silk.” This is how Kuan-Chih Huang describes the instrument’s special sound for him.

Melodies from animated films
The first melodies Kuan-Chih Huang remembers from his childhood are those from animated films. Even back then, the music was what made the films exciting for him. At primary school, he learnt the recorder, piano and classical guitar. He later discovered the harmonica at high school, where there was a corresponding orchestra. His parents are not musicians, but are very supportive and follow their son’s musical interests.

Harmonica clubs
There are many opportunities to learn the harmonica in Taiwan, especially at schools. The harmonica orchestras here are also called harmonica clubs. A name that evokes a relaxed place where like-minded people meet, have fun together and also make music.

Kuan-Chih Huang has been playing in the “Sirius Ensemble” since 2016. And he is happy to share his deep passion with the other five, to philosophise about music and ultimately to take it out into the world. “A bass harmonica has a deep and even tone. As my harmonica has double reeds, it also produces a deep and resonant sound with a warm and captivating tone.”

Kuan-Chih Huang has been teaching young people to play the harmonica for many years. In doing so, it is important to him to first teach the various playing techniques in order to then delve into the true depths of music. He wants to instil a love of music in children and young people – regardless of the genre – to broaden their horizons and, above all, make them stronger for life.
This is what he has experienced himself and continues to experience every day.
