Training for teachers and harmonica players: breathing and harmonica, beyond the instrument
6–8 May, 2027
Bergmannstr. 29, 10961 Berlin
Whether you teach music at a school, lead yoga classes or conduct a choir, the way people breathe has a decisive effect on their physical and emotional well-being, and therefore directly on your work with them.
Children and teenagers in particular find it hard to focus on their own breathing. This is where the harmonica comes in: it is one of the few instruments that produces notes on both the inhale and the exhale. Anyone who plays it trains their breathing almost automatically. Targeted rhythmic exercises bring a group together and foster concentration and mindfulness.
Studies have shown that using certain breathing patterns can help deal with stress and anxiety, induce states of calmness, improve concentration and gain confidence. Playing the harmonica opens up new ways of coping with physical, mental and emotional strain.
If you work with people as a teacher
In this course you will learn the basics of playing harmonica from scratch, enough to teach simple tricks to children… and adults, of course!
You will also dive deep into breathwork practices using the harmonica. Breathing through a harmonica in group creates a drone sound that produces a sense of unity and cohesion, as if the class were an orchestra playing in a sound meditation. We will also talk about healthy breathing habits and about breathing practices that will help us develop resources to deal with all kinds of emotional issues.
After this course you will be able to teach basic tricks and games with the harmonica, but mostly you will have the knowledge to introduce breathwork practices in your class… and make it fun!
If you already play the harmonica
Harmonica players are welcome too, whether they wish to connect more deeply with their breathing and implemt breathwork practices in their daily life or share them with their students. We will devote most of the time to breathing practices, but there will be a short introduction to the instrument.
The course is designed for beginners and intermediate players who wish to learn more about breathwork and improve some of the fundamentals of playing harmonica, such as posture, tone, stress management when playing and air management in your lungs, or how to regulate your breath in order to always have the optimal amount of air in your lungs for playing in a more relaxed and effective way.
THE INSTRUCTOR
Quim Roca started playing harmonica in his 30s, and soon after, breathing awareness began changing his life.
In his 50s, after years of self-healing, extensive reading, and undertaking different formations in sound therapy, breathwork and energy healing practices, he created BeHarpy to share his experience and to present harmonica and overtone singing as tools to explore and to achieve a deeper intimacy with our breathing and to connect with our body, our mind and our creativity.
Since 2013, he has been offering Conscious Breathing, Harmonica and Overtone Singing workshops in different countries and in 2026 he created the course “Conscious Breathing: The 7 Steps”.
