The harmonica is full of untapped potential. The instrument hasn’t yet reached the same level of innovation and recognition as instruments like the piano, guitar, or saxophone. That leaves a lot of exciting ground to explore.
The idea is to turn so-called “boring” tasks into something more musical and inspiring. Repetition, for example, is crucial for developing many skills in music. Rather than avoiding it, I believe in finding ways to transform repetitive exercises into fun and exciting games—ones you can get lost in. When approached like this, practice becomes less of a chore and more of an exploration.
Another area I’ve found especially challenging is rhythm and phrasing: playing with a strong sense of time and groove, whether it’s swing, funk, Middle Eastern, or any other rhythmically driven music. In my own development as a harmonica player, I’ve placed a lot of focus on this. I’m always looking for ways to make my phrasing feel more grounded, grooving, and closer to what I hear in my head.
In this workshop, I’ll share some of the ideas, tools and strategies that can help musicians — not just harmonica players, of course — at every level to transform their practice time into something focused and enjoyable, while approaching such important topics as phrasing and rhythm.
