Sound & Design for Accordion

It is hard to remain unmoved by Austrian accordionist Jakob Steinkellner’s “Soundkistn”. Steinkellner is a storyteller who transforms emotions into sound with every chord. For the FEN MASTER WORKSHOPS 2027, however, he is setting aside his Styrian accordion to focus on the sound of all the types of accordion.

How does one create a distinctive sound on the accordion? And how do technique, style and musical ideas come together to form a unique sound?

This masterclass is aimed at accordionists, musicians and creative sound explorers who wish to rediscover their instrument and develop their sound further. The focus is on sound, tone and expression, musical identity, arrangement, playing style combined with technique, expression and the conscious use of timbres – essentially everything that brings music to life.

Together, we will engage in practical work, experiment, analyse and create. The aim is to open up new sonic perspectives and make individual musical ideas, including personal preferences and styles, audible.

Further workshop content:

  • Sound design and sound awareness
  • Playing techniques, articulation and dynamics
  • Arrangement and musical design
  • Development of personal sound profiles
  • Practical exercises, collaborative work and discussion

Prerequisites: This workshop is aimed at advanced players and those with a solid foundation in accordion playing. If you have any questions, please email: julia@fascination-education-network.de.

THE INSTRUCTOR
On stage, Jakob Steinkellner currently performs primarily with his Styrian accordion, which has become his main stage instrument over the years. As a lecturer, however, he loves every type of accordion. The Austrian studied instrumental and vocal pedagogy and aims to help accordionists develop their own sound and make their pieces interesting and unique.

Steinkellner teaches as a guest lecturer at international conservatoires and universities in Europe, Latin America and Asia. He is an endorser for the Landerer accordion manufacturer in Bad Tölz (Germany) and, as deputy chairman of the Upper Austrian Accordion Association, is committed to promoting and networking within the accordion scene.

Between 2023 and 2025, Jakob Steinkellner played over 200 concerts in more than 30 countries worldwide. His musical travels have taken him across Europe, Asia, North and South America.
